“Psst, Sara,” Wendy whispered into the lab occupied by the two female investigators of the nightshift.
Sara’s head immediately popped up, and she turned her attention to the visitor.
“Hey, Wendy. Have the results come back on the evidence I dropped off earlier?”
Glancing left and right, and then at Catherine, Wendy replied, “Um. . . yes, but I’d like to talk to you about it in private.”
Catherine glared at the young woman and said, “Wendy, this is my case, too. Whatever you have to say to Sara; you need to say to me as well.”
Sara simply shrugged her shoulders and nodded that it was indeed okay to share the evidence with her co-worker, so Wendy stepped into the room and slowly walked toward the two women.
“Well, you see, I ran the DNA on the vic’s shirt, and it was a perfect match to the suspect,” Wendy explained in a shaky tone.
The two investigators smiled broadly and turned to high-five each other in celebration, but Wendy’s voice had them stopping their slap in midair.
“Um, there’s more,” the quiet voice offered.
“More? More as in good or more as in bad?” Catherine questioned the lab technician.
“I guess it would be more as in bad?” Wendy answered in the form of a question.
“Wendy, you said the DNA matched the suspect, so how could anything bad play into this?” Sara asked in confusion.
Wendy nervously shifted from foot to foot, and replied, “Um, there was another piece of evidence that I came across that may somehow pose a problem.”
“What other piece of evidence?” Catherine asked as she turned her full attention to the DNA specialist.
“You see, I, um… found something in the pocket of the vic’s shirt,” Wendy said as she began to wring her hands, wishing she was anywhere else but in this particular lab with these two particular investigators.
“What?” Sara questioned as she was the one to thoroughly examine the shirt and knew for a fact that there was nothing in the pocket when she turned the evidence over to the young woman.
“A toothpick,” Wendy whispered as she looked down at the floor.
Each woman immediately voiced their response in almost perfect harmony; Catherine’s in a confused tone, “A toothpick?”, and Sara’s in shocked voice, “Oh my God.”
Wendy glanced at Sara and nodded her head at the unspoken question, and ever observant, Catherine caught the exchange.
“What the hell is going on here?” The fair haired investigator asked in anger.
Wendy was the first to answer and responded, “The DNA on the toothpick came back to one of our own.”
“What?” A surprised Catherine asked.
Sara reached back for nearby stool and somehow managed to sit as she put her face in her hands.
Catherine turned to her colleague and asked, “Sara, do you know something about this?”
Before Sara could answer, a knock sounded at the door facing of the lab, and Sofia entered the room as all eyes fell on the sexy detective.
Sofia immediately looked down at her clothing and asked, “What? Did I spill something on myself?”
When no answer was forthcoming, Sofia glanced back up at the three women and shifted a toothpick from one side of her mouth to the other.
Wendy shook her head and sighed, and Sara burrowed her face back into her hands as Catherine zeroed in on the small piece of wood.
Catherine’s exclamation of “Oh my God!” reverberated throughout the lab, causing all personnel to run into the hallway to look for the force that caused the glass in their respective labs and offices to shake.

a tiny piece of wood may be so hot
It is pretty damn hot, and whoever came up with the idea should be given a raise.

Date: 2006-10-22 02:05 pm (UTC)Ah, I kind of left that up to the reader; however, Sara knows...especially since she is the one who delivered the evidence AND is very well aware that the toothpick wasn't there when she first examined the clothing. Hmmm, me thinks Sofia appeared sometime in between the initial check and the delivery...
