Oh Lord, here we go again. There’s that look; the one that says ‘you’ve really pissed me off this time.’
Last time Olivia gave that look, she was impossible to work with. In fact, she nearly bit my head off when I tried to make light of the situation.
Matter of fact, I think it was exactly three months ago to the day . . .
We’d been assigned to a rape case where a senator’s son had been the lead suspect. Liv busted her ass to track the guy down, and she did everything in her power to collect the evidence needed to arrest him. She followed procedure to the letter and worked her tail off night and day, only catching a couple of hours sleep here and there in the crib.
Finally, Olivia was able to discredit the bastard’s alibi and even found a witness placing him in the rape victim’s building minutes before the rape occurred. All that was needed was a DNA sample, and the case would be a slam dunk.
And that’s when Alex happened to walk into the room. Olivia was so excited, she raced over to the ADA to show her the information she had gathered so that Alex could get a court order for the guy's DNA. Alex just shook her head and told Olivia that her hands were tied, and she wasn’t allowed to be involved in the case.
Well, needless to say, Olivia went ballistic. First, it was the look, and then she took Alex by the arm and escorted her to a nearby interview room, slamming the door behind them. Even Munch was afraid to try to eavesdrop in the nearby viewing room.
Thirty minutes later, Alex came out, and it was obvious that she’d been crying, even her lips were swollen. She walked past us with her head down and avoided eye contact with everyone. Munch just shook his head and went back to reading his file.
I waited another fifteen minutes before I decided to check on Liv, and I watched from outside the interview room as she sat at the table looking down at her hands. I jumped back from the window when she slammed her fist down on the table and abruptly stood, knocking the chair over in the process.
Liv quickly strode toward the door and walked in before I could even think of sneaking out.
“How long have you been standing there, Elliott?” Olivia asked in an accusatory tone.
“Only a couple of minutes; I saw Alex leave so I thought I’d come check on you,” I replied in my defense.
“I don’t need a mother, Elliott. I’m fine,” Olivia answered as she turned and walked away.
The next week, Olivia was back to normal and seemed to be paying extra attention to Alex. I guess she was feeling guilty about making her cry.
The two of them started having lunch together, and I was pretty sure they’d been to a few movies and had late night dinners. I was glad to see Liv finally had a friend she could turn to, and I believed Alex probably needed a friend as well.
Anyway, things have been great around the precinct until today when Alex found out that Liv’s been doing some undercover work. She came blasting in here a few minutes ago demanding that Olivia leave the undercover work to the undercover cops.
So now, here we are. Me, drinking my coffee, and Liv, with arms folded, glaring at our ADA; however, this time, Alex is glaring right back at Liv. It kind of reminds me of one of those old western gunfights. Who’s going to be the first to flinch?
There is complete silence in the squad room except for the ticking of the clock on the wall, and the other detectives are trying to discreetly watch the two women while appearing to be doing something else.
Finally, Liv uncrosses her arms and reaches for Alex. Damn, she’s going to make her cry again, I just know it.
Alex looks at Liv’s outstretched hand and slowly unfolds her arms. A few seconds later, she takes Liv’s hand in hers, and Olivia turns to lead her to the interview rooms.
At least this time, Alex went voluntarily so maybe their friendship will allow the two of them to talk civilly to each other.
Finishing my coffee, I get back to the reports piled up on my desk.
“Hey, Elliott,” Munch yells as he enters the room.
“Yeah?”
“I just past Olivia and Alex as I came in, and Olivia said to tell you that she wouldn’t be back for the rest of the day,” Munch reports as he pours himself a cup of coffee.
Some detective I am, I didn’t even realize they'd left the building. Smiling, I turn back to my reports, thankful once again, that the two ladies have become friends.
*Later in Alex’s apartment*
“You don’t think Elliott suspects anything, do you?” Alex asked as her lover’s hand ventured due south.
“No, I don’t, but Alex, do you really want to talk about Elliot right now?” Olivia replied, just before she took a nipple into her mouth.
“Oh, Liv,” was her lover’s response as Alex turned her complete focus to their lovemaking.
