Challenge: Sara/Sofia, rubber ducky, crime scene
Disclaimer: No ownership, simply fluff
Author’s Note: I borrowed this idea from another story, and since it was mine, I thought it would be okay to use it in this fluff. I’m also not happy with my title, but I can’t think of another at this time.
Sara strode past a couple of laughing patrolmen on her way to the master bath of the hotel suite. She shook her head in anger at the two men who seemingly had no respect for the dead victim, and she made a mental note to fill in the lead detective on the unprofessionalism of the officers as she stepped over the threshold leading to the crime scene.
Turning toward the entrance of the bathroom, Sofia smiled and said, “Hey, Sara. I think you’ve got your work cut out for you on this one.”
Walking the rest of the way into the room, Sara stopped next to the detective and looked down at the victim lying in a bathtub full of water. A rope from the shower head was tied to his hands and his mouth was covered with duct tape. His eyes were wide open, and he appeared to be focused on the yellow rubber duck floating in the middle of the tub.
The submerged hairdryer which was still plugged into the wall looked to be the possible cause of death.
Sara slid her sunglasses down her nose and took a closer look at the duck in question. The rubber duck was sitting perfectly still in the middle of the tub and had not moved an inch during her observations.
Upon further investigation, it also appeared that victim’s feet were permanently affixed to the end of the tub. Sara stepped toward the far end and frowned as she tried to discern why the feet in question hadn’t risen to the surface.
Sofia’s soft voice coming from over her shoulder very near her ear caused her to shiver.
“Sara, I was wondering about that as well, but I think someone superglued his feet to the end of the tub before the water was added. There is a tube of the glue over on the counter, but I think you might want to move your focus back to the rubber ducky.”
Looking over her shoulder, Sara was surprised to see Sofia still standing so near. In fact, if she were to turn her head a little more, their lips would certainly meet. Sara quickly swiveld her head back to the forward position and stepped laterally toward the middle of the tub and away from temptation.
She went down on one knee and turned her head to the side to get a better view of the duck. Her eyes focused on the yellow toy, and her head snapped up when she was able to put two and two together. Immediately, she turned to look at a grinning Sofia.
“Figured it out have you?” Sofia asked in a teasing tone.
Ignoring the question, a red faced Sara replied with a question of her own.
“Why would someone superglue a rubber duck to this guy’s penis?”
Sofia shrugged her shoulders and responded, “I don’t know, but if we catch the guy, it’s the first thing I’m asking.”
The two women grinned at each other, and the moment was broken when Brass entered the room.
“Okay, ladies. I’ve got some information that you’re not going to like, but just remember, I’m the messenger. We identified the vic as Tony Luciano, a suspected Mafia hit man visiting from New York. I guess someone got to Tony before he could get to them. Anyway, the FBI is taking over and Grissom has ordered Sara to stay in case she’s needed.”
Sofia grinned widely and opened her mouth to offer a teasing remark when Jim suddenly added, “And Sofia, the sheriff wants you to stay as well.”
The two women turned to Brass and opened their mouths to give it to him with both barrels, but Brass held up his hand effectively stopping the barrage of words.
As a peace offering, he said, “I’ll stay here until the feds arrive and give them your cell phone numbers. There’s a small coffee shop still open on the first floor. Why don’t the two of you go and relax ? They can call you if you’re needed.”
Both women smiled their thanks and quickly left the suite before Brass could change his mind. As they entered the elevator, Sofia said, “You know I’ve been meaning to ask you out for coffee, but it seems there’s never a good time.”
Smiling, Sara offered, “Well, now’s as good a time as any.”
The elevator opened to the ground floor, and Sofia placed her hand on Sara’s back ushering her from the car. Sara allowed the contact as the two women walk across the lobby to the intimate coffee shop.
The women drank their coffee and spent hours getting to know each other as the call from the feds never come. As their shift ended, each woman placed a call to their respective boss and was given the go ahead to leave the hotel.
On their way to their vehicles, Sofia nervously asked, “Why don’t we take in a movie and dinner this Saturday?”
“I’d really love that,” Sara softly replied.
Sofia opened the door for Sara to enter her Yukon, and Sara smiled her thanks.
As Sofia walked away towards her own car, Sara called out, “Hey, Sofia. I’ve got a theory about the rubber duck.”
Sofia turned back, and Sara offered, “I don’t think the killer wanted to go all the way out to Lake Mead and used the duck instead.”
Confused, Sofia asked, “What do you mean?”
Grinning, Sara replied, “Surely you’ve heard the Mafia expression referring to the dead guy as sleeping with the fish. Maybe all this hitman had was a rubber ducky.”
