Sam appeared in the corridor all geared up and ready to go on another mission through the gate, she only had one stop to make before heading to the gate room. Walking into the commissary she strolled up to the dessert window, looking around at the different selections; she was disappointed in not finding what she had come for. Just then, one of the airmen working kitchen duty walked out from the back.

“Excuse me,” Sam said as she stopped him, “Is there anymore coffee cake left?”

“No ma’am; sorry, but it went pretty fast this morning. It was a good batch too. Can I get you anything else ma’am?“ he replied.

“No…that’s okay,” Sam told him as she hitched her pack up and walked past him.

Grumbling to herself, Sam entered the gate room where the rest of the team was waiting. Frowning, she stood by Daniel as they waited for the gate to begin dialing.

Daniel noticed the frown, “Is there a problem Sam?” he asked.

“No…it’s nothing; what are we expecting to find on this planet?” she asked, changing the subject.

Sam listened to Daniel babble on about some ruins he hoped to find as the gate came to life; walking up the ramp the four members of SG-1 entered the horizon, off on another mission.

Five hours later the team finally made it to the ruins Daniel hoped to find, but it had not been easy. Apparently, the planet was experiencing its rainy season or maybe monsoon season was more appropriate. After trudging through fields transformed into swampland, they were trying to set up some sort of dry camp.

Sam set up her tent in a semi dry spot formed from two trees leaning against the thick walls of the ruin, lugging her wet pack into the tent she set about trying to get dry as quickly as possible. Today was just not going well she thought. First, she missed saying goodbye to Janet because the doctor was involved in surgery, then she missed acquiring some cake and now she was tired, soaking wet, and a little bit depressed as well.

Shrugging out of her wet t-shirt, she reached into her pack for a dry one, pulling it out she noticed a foam box under some of the other articles of clothing. Pulling out the box, she turned it over in her hands, wondering what it was and how it had gotten in her pack.

Removing the tape from around it, she opened the box. As it opened, a piece of paper fell out, setting the box down, she picked up the note, opening it to read.

Hi Sweetie!
Happy Birthday! I’m sorry I missed you this morning before you left but I hope this makes up for it some. I know you like to have cake for your birthday, so I thought I’d surprise you with a treat. It’s not much just a piece of the commissary’s coffee cake but I plan to have a real cake waiting on your return….that and a very big present to unwrap. Enjoy your treat and try to stay safe. I’m waiting for your return.
Love you always!
Janet

Sam picked up the box, opening it she discover several layers of tin foil protecting a square of coffee cake, with chocolate icing. Grinning she removed it from the foil and took a big bite out of it. Smiling happily, as she chewed her treat, her day just got ten times better.
