Janet Frasier rushed into the isolation room of the infirmary and confronted her very flustered nurse. “Sarah, how could you have let her just walk out? She is delirious for God’s sake. She could be anywhere on this base by now, and with her IQ, there is no end to the damage she can cause.”
The nurse wrung her hands and replied, “I’m sorry, Doctor Frasier. She was so engrossed in the movie I set up for her to watch that I thought I could run down and pick up something to eat and be back in plenty of time before the movie’s end.”
Pinching the bridge of her nose, Janet said, “Maybe we can get some sort of clue where she went from the movie she was watching. What did you show her?”
Sarah looked down at her shoes and replied, “She wanted to watch ‘Mary Poppins.’”
Open mouthed, Janet answered, “Oh my God. Surely, she doesn’t think she can fly using an umbrella.”
The doctor turned and ran from the room in search of General Hammond as her mind raced with different scenarios from the movie. ‘At least we don’t have any chimneys on the base.’
Janet met with the general and explained the situation. He didn’t hesitate to call in the rest of the SG-1 team to help search for their missing team member. Afterward, he alerted the security personnel to be on the lookout for Major Samantha Carter.
During the next hour, reports surfaced from different areas of the military base. One security guard called in to say he heard singing coming from the main research lab, and he could have sworn it was the lyrics and melody of ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.’
The mess hall cook stated that Major Carter had come in earlier asking for porridge and calling her Mrs. Brill. When she told Major Carter she didn’t have any porridge, she said ‘fiddlesticks’ and left. The cook also reported Major Carter carried a huge purse over her shoulder.
Janet found a member of SG-3 who told her he had seen Sam about thirty minutes ago. She had some sort of sooty looking stuff on her face and wanted him to dance with her. When he tried to talk her into returning to the infirmary, she pirouetted away humming “A Step in Time.”
Major Carter sightings occurred about every fifteen minutes, but no one was able to apprehend her. Janet was beginning to get very worried as it was nearing time for Sam’s next dose of antibiotic. ‘Please let her be found soon. From what I’ve heard, she’s had a spoonful of sugar and tried to feed imaginary birds.’
A break came when a supply clerk reported to be missing string, scotch tape, glue, paper, wood dowels, scissors, and markers. Janet smiled at the vision of her lover making a kite, and knowing Sam, she won’t rest until she’s tried it out.
Janet didn’t waste any time taking the elevator to the main entrance. Exiting, she walked up to the security personnel and asked if anyone had seen Major Carter. None of the three had so she started for the gate when one of the guards asked, “Where are you going, Doctor Frasier? Major Carter is still on the base.”
Grinning, Janet replied, “Boys, you underestimate the major. I can assure you she is not on this base. Well, at least not behind these gates.”
The three guards looked at Janet as if she too had lost her mind. Janet merely laughed and began to walk toward the field overlooking the mountain. She knew she was close when she heard, “Let's go fly a kite Up to the highest height! Let's go fly a kite and send it soaring Up through the atmosphere Up where the air is clear Let's go fly a kite!”
Rounding the bend, Janet gazed upon a most glorious sight. Sam was standing in the middle of the field flying her homemade kite, and to no surprise, it was flying high and proud. As she drew near her lover, she could make out the black smudges on her face and note the huge carpetbag replica at her feet.
Sam turned when she saw Janet, and Janet froze in her tracks not wanting to scare Sam away. Smiling, Sam said, “Janet! Come see my kite. I’m trying to get it high enough so that the folks on P3X-729 can see it.”
Janet was pleased to see Sam’s memories starting to return even if she did still think she was Mary Poppins. Taking small steps toward her lover, Janet finally made it to her side just as Sam’s wonderful kite took a nose dive.
Both women stood rooted to their spot as the kite plummeted to the earth. When the kite finally landed in the grass, it flew into hundreds of pieces. With tears in her eyes, Sam reached out for Janet, and Janet pulled her into a loving embrace.
Sam placed her head on Janet’s shoulder and said, “Janet, my kite broke, and I'm so tired.”
Rubbing Sam’s back, Janet replied, “It’s okay, Sam. You can build another one tomorrow. Why don’t we go back to the base so you can get some rest?”
Sam released Janet and picked up her ridiculously large bag. Hand in hand, the two walked back to the main entrance.
The three guards stood with mouths agape when the doctor and major moved toward the gate. As they passed through the entrance, Janet looked at the three men and said, “Like I said, gentlemen. Never underestimate an officer of Major Carter’s caliber.”
As the two women entered the elevator, Janet called out, “Oh, by the way, if I were you, I wouldn’t tell anyone you let Mary Poppins get the best of you.”
